I am in Paris to attend a workshop of two days at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales. I arrived here on Tuesday evening and will go back to Tokyo with today(Thursday)’s flight.

　UTCP Work Salon “Classical Views on Man” took place from the perspective of East Asia.

Jun Tanaka, a member of UTCP published The Urban Poetics – Analyses of Urban Representation from Tokyo University Press. This is a collection of his writings, serialized in the magazine 10+1 from 2004. The total number of pages is 430. A very exciting chapter “Towards an Imageology of the Nervous System” is included. It is a work of poetic analysis of the contemporary representational space. (Yasuo Kobayashi, English translation: Dennitza Gabrakova)

11月22日，UTCP理解伊斯兰讲座第二讲请羽田正教授主讲，题目为“《伊斯兰世界的创造》及其以后”。羽田教授以自己于2005年出版的著作《伊斯兰世界的创造》为主要题材，聚焦于“世俗化”和“世界史”这两个概念，重审伊斯兰理解的框架，提出以“共生的世界史”的形式来摸索回应时代要求的新型历史叙述的可能性。

The vice-leader Masashi Haneda was invited to give a lecture on November 22nd. Based on materials from his book The Creation of the Islamic World (2005), Haneda was questioning the framework of understanding Islam through the notions of “secularization” and “world history” in search of new possibilities to narrate history as “world history of coexistence”.

德勒兹、海德格尔、布朗肖之后，该福柯出场了。每周二下午6点、在18号馆或者8号馆举行的小林康夫教授的研讨班《时代与无意识》，已经让人有了一种习惯的感觉。11月20日，研讨班又不负众望地举行了。

After Deleuze, Heidegger, and Blanchot comes the turn of Foucault. Yasuo Kobayashi’s seminar “Times and the Unconscious”, already familiar to many, was held grandly, according to the expectations on the 20th of November.

The proceedings of the International Symposium (18th -19th November 2005 in Paris University 7 ), organized by CEEI （CENTRE D'ÉTUDE DE L'ÉCRITURE ET DE L'IMAGE）　and UTCP under the title “La lettre et l'image : Nouvelles approaches”[The Letter and the Image New Approaches]
have been published.

佛教的现代可能性问题是前一COE的中心课题之一，对此课题的探讨重又开始了。

This is a report from Leiden, the Netherland. The workshop “Marxism and Japanese Ideology: Takeuchi and Tosaka” was held at MEARC, Leiden University in November 16, 2007.

Yi Youngjae made the third report at the middle-term program “Contemporary Philosophy in China” under the title “The Postcolonial Action Movie as a Contact Zone – A Lawless World”. From the perspective of her field, cinema studies, Yi suggested the possibility that the space of Manchuria, charged with a national history memory, through the contact with the Western genre functioned as a stage of violence, escaping from the state authority.

Atsushi Miura, UTCP project leader, received the 29th Book Prize from Suntory.

This program is conducted by alternating my graduate seminar and the seminars and work salons of UTCP, from 6pm every Tuesday, while all the presentations and discussions are loosely centered on the notion of “times” (age, epoch).

本月14日，将于明年夏天在首尔召开的WCP（World Congress of Philosophy）组织委员会的Seon-Wook Kim教授一行从韩国来访，就明年的会议内容做了详细说明。

On the 14th of November we have received a visit from Professor Seon-Wook Kim and other members of the steering committee of WCP (World Congress of Philosophy) to be held in Seoul next summer.

11月13日，在据点负责人小林康夫的主题为“时代与无意识”的研讨班上，特任讲师西山雄二以其著作《作为抗议的文学——莫里斯·布朗肖的孤独、友爱、共同性》（御茶之水书房，2007年）为蓝本，做了题为《莫里斯·布朗肖与时代——从〈应来的书〉到〈书的缺席〉》的报告。

On the 13th of November, as part of Yasuo Kobayashi’s seminar “Times and the Unconscious”, Yuji Nishiyama, research assistant lecturer, made a presentation under the title “Maurice Blanchot and the times - From ‘the Book to Come’ towards ‘the Absence of the Book’”, based on his recent book Literature as Contestation – Solitude, Friendship and Community in Maurice Blanchot (Ochanomizu-shobo, 2007).

On November 11, I made a presentation at the 40th annual meeting of Philosophy of Science Society, Japan (at Chuo University, Tokyo). The title of my presentation is "Sociology as a political project: Fuller, bioliberalism, value-freedom." Below is its brief report.

The day before yesterday (10/11/2007), I read a paper on "Neuroscience of Morality and the Philosophical Examinations" at the annual meeting of Philosophy of Science Society, Japan (40th.).

The second report at the program “Contemporary China in Philosophy”was also on the theme of “Authority and Ritual”. The title of Misato Ido’s presentation was “Taue-zoshi [Book of Rice Planting]– Memory Carved into The Land”.
Misato Ido analyzed the work Taue-zoshi, a collection of songs for rice planting, discovered in the end of Taisho era, focusing on the social context and the fictional aspect interwoven into it, thus offering a new interpretation.

There are several reasons to proclaim Haifa as a city of “coexistence”.

11月1日，在东京大学驹场校区学际交流厅举行了与“旅行”、“海”、“共生”相关之文学的讲演会，邀请了佛罗伦萨大学的Adele Dei氏、Rita Guerricchio氏和东京大学的宫下志朗教授主讲，参加者大约有50名左右。

Report from Mariko Muramatsu on the symposium “Sea and Travel – Encounters and Coexistence of Civilizations” (Nov. 1st , University of Tokyo, Komaba Campus) with the participation of Adele Dei , Rita Guerricchio (University of Florence), Shiro Myashita (University of Tokyo).

Haifa is a city in Northern Israel and partially due to its proximity to the Galilee district with a numerous Arab-Palestinian population it is known for the high percentage of citizens of Arab origin. The University of Haifa has the largest number of students with Arab background in Israel. The city is also called sometimes “a city of coexistence” or “a bilingual city” (the ideological aspect behind such notions remains to be discussed). Ilan Pappe, who was invited to UTCP last march, used to work at the University of Haifa. He is a historian, who thoroughly criticized the Israeli official history/national history from within Israel. This time we narrowly missed each other because Dr. Pappe has moved to England with his family and started work at the University of Exeter.

In May, a little before the launching of the new UTCP we discussed Benjamin in Shanghai under the title “Metropolis and Cultural Theory”. This vortex produced a new vortex and a letter from Luo Gang (East China Normal University) and Zhang Xudong (New York University) promoting further international exchange, research and education came to UTCP.

The short-term program “Philosophy and University – Genealogy of Modern Philosophical Theories of the University and the Future of Humanities Knowledge” has started. At the first meeting we discussed Bill Readings’ The University in Ruins, made a survey of the historical relationship between philosophy and the university and analyzed the present conditions of the humanities in the age of globalization.

In this program three teams are working at the same time. Reports from the fellows, relating their own research interests to the topic of “Authority and Heresy” will continue for a while. This problematic goes beyond the period and region of “Contemporary China”. Kim Hang did the first report on 2007/11/02.

On October 31, we had a talk by Dennitza Gabrakova. The title of her talk is "The Desert Islands of Utopian Cartography," and it is a re-reading of Japanese postwar literature from her unique perspective. The audience asked many questions and commented on her talk.
