UTCP Lecture “L’Expression du Scepticisme au Cinéma” was held on October 28th 2011 at Komaba Campus.

On April 26, 2011, Patrick Noonan gave a talk entitled “Being By Others: Cinema and Subjectivity in Yoshida Kijū’s Film Theory”. Mr. Noonan is a doctoral candidate at the University of California, Berkeley, and this talk was based upon his dissertation research. Many young international scholars joined the lecture, and participated in a discussion following the talk.

On 9th March 2011, we held an international conference with Prof. Roberto Esposito, Prof. Federico Luisetti, and Prof. Atsushi Okada.

On December 14th, Michael Raine (University of Chicago) gave a presentation entitled Film as a 'Synthetic Art': Imitation, Copyright Infringement, and Masquerade in the Toho Film Musical. As a point of departure, Raine invites us to consider the theme of "deprovincializing film studies", not merely in the sense of exploring non-Western theories of film, but by recalling alternatives to auteurist and political modernist approaches to the study of cinema. This inquiry was developed through an intellectual exchange with Miriam Hansen, in particular around the concept of "vernacular modernism".

On December 1, 2010, Professor Bill Martin gave a talk on Marxism, morality and religion in Collaboration Room 1.

On July 15, 2010, UTCP invited Dr. Rakesh Batabyal of Jawaharlar Nehru University (New Dehli, India). His lecture was titled “Secularisation and the Political: The Indian Context”.

How has neoliberal discourse legitimated itself in Japan? How should we locate it as an historical and cultural phenomenon? What strategies may be fruitful for critiquing it? These are some of the questions addressed by Prof. Richard Reitan in this lecture.

On June 4, Jacqueline Lichtenstein gave a presentation entitled "La naissance de l’esthétique comme discipline philosophique" (The Birth of Aesthetics as a Philosophical Discipline). Starting from its appearance in Germany in the middle of the eighteenth century, Lichtenstein charts the importation of the notion of aesthetics to France, and its gradual acceptance as a philosophical concept.

In April 28, 2010, UTCP invited Professor Rikki Kersten (Modern Japanese Political History) from Australian National University. She gave us a lecture titled “Historical Trauma, Tenko (Apostasy) and Subjective Coherence: Yoshimoto Takaaki’s ‘1945 Complex’”.

Bernhard Waldenfels Seminar Series was held on November 18 (Wed),2009 and November 20 (Fri), 2009.

On December 7, Dr. Tobias Cheung (Max-Planck-Institute for the History of Science, Berlin and Institute for Culture and Science, Humboldt-University, Berlin) gave a talk "How Humans Became Organisms: Some Reflections on the Transition from the Soul-Body-Problem to the Organism-Milieu-Interface."

UTCP Lecture "Limits of grammatical arbitrariness in Wittgenstein" was held on Octorber 14, 2009.

On May 25, 2009, UTCP and the Todai-Yale Initiative invited Haun Saussy, Professor of Comparative Literature at Yale University, to give a talk titled “Two Perspectives on the ‘Thing’ in Poetry: Where Fenollosa and Pound Diverge.”

Reflections on Sara Roy’s Talk "Learning from the Holocaust and the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict" (March 2, 2009)

“It is important to understand the very real differences in volume, scale, and horror between the Holocaust and the [Israeli] occupation and to be careful about comparing the two, but it is also important to recognize parallels where they do exist.”

7月26日到31日，UTCP邀请芝加哥大学的莫里斯•普斯顿教授主讲了三次关于马克思的研讨会。

Professor Charles Shepherdson (State University of New York at Albany) has been in Taiwan during the last two years as a National Science Council Visiting Professor and has taught in National Tsinghua University and National Taiwan University. This time, at the end of his stay in Asia, he kindly accepted our invitation and came to give a lecture on Antigone of Sophocles, which was held on July 9th.

On May 30, there was a talk by Prof. Takashi Ikegami (Associate Professor of The University of Tokyo, Department of General Systems Studies). He has been mainly working on the fields of complex systems, artificial life, and robotics. The talk was about his recent book, Movement Creates Life (Ugoki ga Seimei wo Tsukuru).

On May 8, we had a talk by Prof. Philip Buckley (McGill University, Canada). The title of his talk was "Husserl on Culture and Interculturality."

On April 22 and 25, we held a seminar and a lecture by Prof. Mitsuhiro Yoshimoto (Associate Professor, Dept. of East Asian Studies, New York University).

On April 11, we held a seminar by Mr. Muhammad Salleh (the Malaysian poet). The seminar was titled "Possibilities and Functions of Poetry." This is our first event of the new academic year.

Dan Morita is discussing Francisco Naishtat’s paper in relation to the difficulties and the possibilities of creating a passage from Walter Banjamin’s Passagenwerk to Freud’s theory of psychoanalysis.

At the end of February we had the opportunity to hear the presentations of Tom Cohen and Francisco Naishtat. Despite their different approaches the problematic they treated was surprisingly shared. It would be possible to discern here two approaches of self-criticism in the humanities of 21st century.

Following the exciting lecture of Tom Cohen we had a joint seminar by him and Akira
Mizuta Lippit. We were juxtaposing Hitchcock’s Birds with Michael Haneke’s Cache in order to see how the culturally and historically powerful trope of the “house” and interiority has its foundations shaken faced by the problematic of an ecological and critical “climate change”.

Kais Firro（以色列海法大学中东史学科）先生于1月28日在UTCP讲演了“双语城市海法的共生（不）可能性”之后，至31日，连续四天的研究会结束，于2月1日回国。虽说是连续四天的研究会，但每天从上午开始进行个人的研究指导，每天的讲演、答疑之后，在联谊会上又继续展开热烈的讨论，回到宾馆时已经是晚上11点以后了。其间Firro先生显示出来的博学、对任何提问都直接面对的态度以及对研究的热情，让我获得了超出知识层面的刺激。

Kais Firro (The Department of Middle Eastern History, Haifa University, Israel) pronounced a lecture on the 28th of January at UTCPunder the title “The (Im-)possibility of Coexistence in Bilingual Haifa”, had research seminars for four days until the 31st and left for Israel on the 1st of February.
