The Review Symposium on Eureka (2010, 12) was held on January 30, 2011. We (Takaki HAYAO, Tetsuro IRIE, Maika NAKAO, Yoshimi YASHIRO, Futoshi HOSHINO, Naoya FUJITA) talked about the special issue on Eureka featuring Hiromu Arakawa and discussed her comic "Fullmetal Alchemist".

Dr. Shlomo Sand(Tel Aviv Univ. of Israel) made the lecture "Israel: Jewish and Democratic" at UTCP.

We had a dialogue with Dr. Meron Benvenisti on March 16, 2010. He published a book, Sacred Landscape: Buried History of the Holy Land Since 1948, in which he argued that there were Jewish settlement activities and then the establishment of a Jewish State, Israel. Thus, the land of Palestine had been “Judaized”.

On March 15, 2010, we held Dr. Meron Benvenisti’s lecture titled “Jews and Arabs: Intimate Enemies” on the Komaba campus of the University of Tokyo.

A collected volume of Dr. Sara Roy's talks, discussions, and interviews in Japan was published as From Holocaust to Gaza by Seidosha.

Reading the World from Diaspora: Bridging Separation, supervised by Akira Usuki and edited by Mitsuharu Akao and Takanori Hayao, was published (Akashi Shoten).

Dr. Sara Roy's interview on Gaza Strip comes on the air by NHK Radio Japan, Tue. 31st March.

The short-term education program, "Philosophy and University," hold five academic meetings, a symposium, and a workshop. Its results were published as UTCP library 3 Philosophy and University, edited by Yuji Nishiyama (Miraisha, 2009).

The workshop "What is the site for the Humanities?" has finished at the Research Machine Suyu+Trans in Seoul. Thanks to the solicitous preparation of Suyu+Trans, we had an excellent event. We express our hearty thanks.

5月27日，UTCP召开讨论会，就UTCP研究员早尾贵纪氏于今年3月出版的著作《犹太与以色列之间——民族／国家的难关》展开了讨论。

The lectures by Prof. Ilan Pappe whom UTCP invited from Haifa Univ. in Israel last year have been published as a book in Japanese language.

Takanori Hayao published Between Jewish and Israel: Aporias of Nation (Seidosha).

Kais Firro（以色列海法大学中东史学科）先生于1月28日在UTCP讲演了“双语城市海法的共生（不）可能性”之后，至31日，连续四天的研究会结束，于2月1日回国。虽说是连续四天的研究会，但每天从上午开始进行个人的研究指导，每天的讲演、答疑之后，在联谊会上又继续展开热烈的讨论，回到宾馆时已经是晚上11点以后了。其间Firro先生显示出来的博学、对任何提问都直接面对的态度以及对研究的热情，让我获得了超出知识层面的刺激。

Kais Firro (The Department of Middle Eastern History, Haifa University, Israel) pronounced a lecture on the 28th of January at UTCPunder the title “The (Im-)possibility of Coexistence in Bilingual Haifa”, had research seminars for four days until the 31st and left for Israel on the 1st of February.

Report by Koichiro Kokubun on Takanori Hayao’s talk　“The Current State of the Straying "Jewish Country"”
Koichiro Kokubun wrote his comments about Hayao’s talk under the title “The Hope-Principle”、focusing on the issues of the change in the demographic composition of Israel, the separation wall, the activities of Picture Balata and the support of the olive harvest by a leftist group.

There are several reasons to proclaim Haifa as a city of “coexistence”.

Haifa is a city in Northern Israel and partially due to its proximity to the Galilee district with a numerous Arab-Palestinian population it is known for the high percentage of citizens of Arab origin. The University of Haifa has the largest number of students with Arab background in Israel. The city is also called sometimes “a city of coexistence” or “a bilingual city” (the ideological aspect behind such notions remains to be discussed). Ilan Pappe, who was invited to UTCP last march, used to work at the University of Haifa. He is a historian, who thoroughly criticized the Israeli official history/national history from within Israel. This time we narrowly missed each other because Dr. Pappe has moved to England with his family and started work at the University of Exeter.
