In this study group, we will examine some of the major topics and methods of twentieth-century critical and literary theory. We will explore and discuss a variety of critical approaches, situating them in larger debates, both historical and contemporary.

On November 13, the graduate symposium “Techniques of the Image” was held at McGill University in Montreal.

We published the eighth volume of the UTCP Booklet, Enhancement, Society, Humanity.

The short-term education program, "Philosophy and University," hold five academic meetings, a symposium, and a workshop. Its results were published as UTCP library 3 Philosophy and University, edited by Yuji Nishiyama (Miraisha, 2009).

On March 2 in 2009, IDO Misato, SAKAGUCHI Sayaka and KAWAMURA Aya participated in the course “Print and Popular Culture” offered by the department of Art History and Communication Studies of McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

The conference ‘Image as History’ was held on February 27th in University of Ottawa. Three members from Ways of Image, one of the 短期教育プログラム(Short-Term Educational Programs) at UTCP, IDO Misato, SAKAGUCHI Sayaka and KAWAMURA Aya, presented their papers in a panel session, along with Professor Eric Allina-Pisano, who teaches African History at the University of Ottawa. This conference was organized by Viren Murthy (Department of History, University of Ottawa), who visited UTCP last summer for his research, in cooperation with Kouky Fianu from the University of Ottawa’s program of Medieval and Renaissance Studies.

On the 16th of June we had the pleasure of inviting Mr. Yoshihiro Suda, a contemporary artist famous for his "weeds" carved of wood.

The fourth meeting of the short-term education program "Philosophy and University" was Hisashi Fujita's talk "The University with Condition: Light and Shadow of French Elite Education".

The first meeting of the short-term education program "The Origins of Philosophy of History: Cosmology and Eschatology" was Tatsuya Nishiyama's talk "Heidegger and Cosmos: Starting from His 'Natorp Report'."

The new short-term education program "The Origins of Philosophy of History" starts. This program is organized mainly by Dan Morita and Koji Otake.

On March 14, the first meeting of “Philosophy and Ethics of Enhancement” was held. The speaker was Prof. Jun Matsuda at Shizuoka University and the title of his talk was “Cyborg ethics and beyond.”

The Japanese translation of Jacques Derrida's The University without Condition was published. This was translated by Yuji Nishiyama, and he wrote a long expository essay "Jacques Derrida and Education."

If there is a possibility to recover a brain with decreased functions, doesn’t it mean that it is also possible to improve the functions of a healthy brain?
The development in neuroscience opens up new possibilities for its technological application to medicine, pharmacy and engineering.

The symposium was a part of the open joint study “Philosophy and the University” , whose main objective was to reexamine the understanding of the university of various philosophers as well as well as the relationship between philosophy and the system and ideals of the university.

The Conflict of Faculties (1798) along with Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View is one of the last works Kant published in his lifetime. Several of the essays of the first edition were banned by the censorship and in the preface there is an excuse to Friedrich Wilhelm II, who did the censorship. A theory of the university is developed in the first part “Conflict of the Faculty of Philosophy and the Faculty of Theology”. Although only 20 pages in the Japanese translation it really poses an abundance of questions.

The short-term program “Philosophy and University – Genealogy of Modern Philosophical Theories of the University and the Future of Humanities Knowledge” has started. At the first meeting we discussed Bill Readings’ The University in Ruins, made a survey of the historical relationship between philosophy and the university and analyzed the present conditions of the humanities in the age of globalization.

Young researchers, according to their interests, at their own initiative design a one-year short-term program and carry it out, supervised by the program manager and the professors of the same course. Workshops with young researchers from the affiliated universities or educational facilities are organized as well.
