[Report] UTCP Lecture "Limits of grammatical arbitrariness in Wittgenstein"

2 December, 2009 NAKAZAWA Eisuke, OGUCHI Mineki, Visiting Speaker Series

UTCP Lecture "Limits of grammatical arbitrariness in Wittgenstein" was held on Octorber 14, 2009.

Mr. Henrik Voss, a graduate student of the University of Tokyo, presented his ongoing doctoral thesis. The most impressive point of his research is the connection between cognitive linguistics and Wittgenstein's philosophy of language. In his lecture, Mr. Voss focused on grammatical arbitrariness in Wittgenstein and examined the applicability of cognitive linguistics to Wittgensten's philosophy of language.

Although I want to tell you how excellent the lecture is, unfortunately I cannot do so. This is because Mr. Voss's lecture was based on his doctoral thesis which has not yet been completed.

But one thing I can say is that his empirical methods will give a significant impact on philosophical discourses of language. In the near future, we will be able to see new developments of Wittgenstein research.
