要旨
In this lecture, Prof. Mieszkowski will ask what it means to be a spectator to war today, in an era when the boundaries between witnessing and perpetrating violence have become profoundly blurred. Showing that the battlefield was a virtual phenomenon long before the invention of photography, film, or the Internet, He will propose that the unique character of modern conflicts has been a product of imaginary as much as material forces. He will also argue that spectacles of war have tended to disappoint their audiences as much as shock them, in part because there is little agreement about what we can hope to learn by viewing battles.
