Profiles of Joel Wainwright
Professor at the Department of Geography at Ohio State University, specialized in Critical Geography. While conducting research on a diverse range of topics centered on Marxist and postcolonial theory, Mr. Wainwright is also an activist actively committed to the climate justice movement and other causes. He is the author of Decolonial Development: Colonial Power and the Maya, translated by Susumu Ota (Inscript, 2024) and the co-author of Climate Leviathan: A Political Theory of Our Planetary Future (Horinouchi Press, 2024).
Lecture Contents
Nation-states are not capable of dealing with global-scale problems such as climate crises and pandemics. If so, how will the nature of sovereignty be transformed in the future? How will this affect the future of capitalism?
To coincide with the publication of Climate Leviathan, which deals with such issues, we will be asking Mr. Wainwright, who is currently in residence at the Komaba campus for a year, in a dialogue format. We hope to have an opportunity to casually discuss various topics such as his career to date, his encounter with Marxism, the influence of Kojin Karatani, the Palestinian issue, and his current work at Komaba, and we look forward to active participation by students who are interested in climate change, Marxism, and philosophy.
