In the last few decades a new discursive formation has emerged in English-speaking countries bearing the misleadingly simple name of "Theory". This new field may exist either as a self-referential theoretical machine, or as a theoretical canon to be applied to culture as a whole. This workshop intends to critically discuss this phenomenon, calling attention to its promises and shortcomings and reconstituting the debate it has generated in the United States.
