The Duty to Protect One's Privacy and the Ethics of Encryption

Dr. Carissa Veliz
The Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics, University of Oxford

In a historical moment where privacy-invasive technologies are becoming ubiquitous, where an economy of personal data is fueling the internet, and where businesses are struggling to come up with ethical codes and states are passing laws to balance security and privacy, it is of the utmost importance to reflect on the nature of privacy, its value, and the rights and duties attached to it. The presentation looks at the ethics and political philosophy of privacy.
