Title:
A comparative study of transformation and localization of crowdfunding in Japan and Taiwan

【Abstract】
As the Internet immerses in our daily life step by step, crowdfunding online has become a popular way of fund raising, issue supporting, and commodity buying in recent years. According to National Crowdfunding Association (NLCFA), crowdfunding refers to the practice of raising funds through the collection of small contributions from general public using the Internet and social media.

Kickstarter, the most distinguished crowdfunding platform, was established in 2009. And this online crowdfunding wave had swept across the world. In Japan, Makuake is the most famous crowdfunding platform which was started in 2012. It focuses on innovative products as well as Kickstarter. On the other hand, Makuake develops its own route to make crowdfunding suit in Japanese culture, including prime minister Abe’s policy of regional revitalization.

In Taiwan, the first crowdfunding platform appeared in 2012. And it turns out to be popular on new production, startup, and especially social movement from 2014. There are large numbers of projects associated with political ideology and the consciousness of being Taiwanese. Through the crowdfunding, the consciousness is more distinct on both proposers and sponsors.

The most interesting feature of crowdfunding is that it depends on “trust” online. Also, as a new type of funding, promoting and marketing, crowdfunding needs to be suitable in the different cultures. According to crowdfunding, we can find another way to rethink about the capitalization and localization in this Internet era. In this study, I intend to compare the crowdfunding between Taiwan and Japan, and find out the values behind them.
