UTCP Seminar on Japanese Philosophy "The Aesthetics of Urban Wandering in the Essays of Nagai Kafū and Zhou Zuoren" was held on June 23, 2010.

The 1st Meeting of "The Study Group of Communicatoin, Rehabilitation, and Phenomenology" was held on June 6, 2010. This study group is organized by the UTCP mid-term program “Science, Technology, and Society”.

The fourth seminar of the Mid-Term Education Program 'Ecriture and Though in Modern East Asia' was held on May 7 (presentation) and May 21 (discussion). Midori Hakozaki (Master student, Comparative Literature and Culture) presented her work entitled 'Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms around Sino-Japanese War', and the discussant was Bae Kwan-Mun (Ph.D. student, Comparative Literature and Culture/UTCP ).

On June 16, 2010, UTCP held the eleventh lecture on Understanding Islam on the Komaba campus of the University of Tokyo.

The Natural History of Images: From Angels to Seashells [Japanese] written by TANAKA Jun (UTCP) was published.

On May 26th I gave a talk entitled "The Perceptual Constancy Problem as an aspect of the Binding Problem." In this talk I proposed a new approach to the perceptual constancies. I proposed that the problematic converse aspect of constancy - percptual relativity - is caused by the peculiar way in which properties tend to be co-represented within a sensory modality. I further proposed that perceptual relativity in the above sense is not simultaneous relativity, but rather a gestalt-like re-evaluation of the scene, much like so-called "mulitstable perception", such as when viewing a Necker cube. The underlying mechanisms should be very similar - a consequence which ought to be empirically testable.

Having Professor Chen Peifeng (Academia Sinica, Taiwan) as a guest, the First Workshop 'The Creation and Boundary of Creolized Chinese Classics: Colonial Chinese Classics in Japan-ruled Taiwan' of the Mid-term Education Program 'Ecriture and Thought in Modern East Asia' was held on June 11, 2010.

On June 4, Jacqueline Lichtenstein gave a presentation entitled "La naissance de l’esthétique comme discipline philosophique" (The Birth of Aesthetics as a Philosophical Discipline). Starting from its appearance in Germany in the middle of the eighteenth century, Lichtenstein charts the importation of the notion of aesthetics to France, and its gradual acceptance as a philosophical concept.

The third seminar entitled "Althusser's Ideology Critique and Taylor's Scientific Management" was held on April 23 (presentation) and May 14 (discussion).
