【報告】16th TCCP Colloquium: Social Implications of Research in Developmental Disorders

2010.03.01 石原孝二, 筒井晴香, 脳科学と倫理

In the 16th TCCP Colloquium Kohji Ishihara discussed social implications of research in developmental disorders.

In the colloquium Kohji Ishihara discussed social implications of research in developmental disorders by referring to the history of research in developmental disorders. For example, in the history of autism research we can find tragic cases concerning so-called “refrigerator mothers,” a term which assigned mothers of autistic persons wrongly as an etiology of autism. These cases show that the research into the cause of developmental disorders could have implications on family members of persons with developmental disorders. Other research topics have included: medicalization of underperformance, misuse of Ritalin, and the relationships between recent studies in “social brains” and developmental disorder research.
